Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You develop a Visual C++ application in Microsoft Visual Studio 2010.

  • You build the application.

In this scenario, it takes longer than expected to compile the application.

Notes

  • This issue typically occurs when the application contains a long function in which a local variable is assigned and used multiple times. Additionally, the function that is in the type is usually machine-generated code.

  • The issue is more likely to occur if the /GS (Buffer Security Check) compiler option is enabled when you compile the application.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must have Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 installed.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you install the hotfix if the affected files are not being used during the installation process. We recommend that you close all Visual Studio 2010-related components before you install the hotfix.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

Workaround

To work around this issue, disable the optimization option for machine-generated code that contains large functions when you compile the application. To disable the optimization option, use one of the following methods:

  • Use the /Od compiler option.

  • Use the #pragma optimize ("", off) statement in the source code.
