Installation of Windows Updates will sit at "Installing updates…" on Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 and not go any further

SYMPTOMS

Consider the scenario:

A computer running Windows Storage Server 2008 R2
Select to install Windows Updates
Windows Internet Explorer 9 is one of the selected updates

In this scenario after all of the updates selected have been downloaded and the installation proceeds to install the updates. Windows Update will sit at “Installing Updates…Installing update nn of nn… Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows Server 2008 R2” and seems to not go any further.

CAUSE

This is due to a known issue with the Windows Update code for installing Internet Explorer 9, where the Install Internet Explorer 9 dialog is not the focused window.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue you can either click on the minimize button of the Windows Update dialog to minimize the dialog and allow access to the Install Internet Explorer 9 dialog:

Or click on the Internet Explorer task locked on the Task Bar which will bring the Install Internet Explorer 9 dialog as the focused window:

Once the Install Internet explorer 9 dialog is in focus, you will have three options available to choose from.

Install: The installation of Internet Explorer 9 will proceed and once this update has completed, it will then continue with any remain selected updates. Once this has finished, you may be promoted for a reboot of the server for the changes to be applied.

Ask me later: Internet Explorer 9 will not be installed at this time but the update will remain as a Windows Update item. It will remain in the Windows Update list during the next scheduled update as per the Windows Update settings specified.

Don’t Install: Internet Explorer 9 will not be installed at this time; the update will be removed from the Windows Update list and will not be prompted again. If you later decide you would like to install Internet Explorer 9, you can select to download it Microsoft Downloads web site.
