FIX: "An error occurred when loading the <Name> dimension" error when you perform some operations in SSAS 2012

Symptoms

Assume that you try any of the following operations in Microsoft SQL Server 2012:
  • You create a backup file of a SQL Server Analysis Services 2012 (SSAS 2012) database, and then you try to restore the database by using the backup file.
  • You restart SSAS In-memory Business Intelligence (IMBI) services, and then IMBI tries to read SSAS data from disks.
  • You try to synchronize SSAS 2012 databases.
  • You try to attach an SSAS 2012 database to or detach an SSAS 2012 database from an instance of SQL Server 2012.
In this situation, the SSAS 2012 database might be unavailable. Additionally, you might receive the following error message:
An error occurred when loading the DimensionName dimension, from the file, '\\?\SystemDrive:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSAS11.T1\OLAP\Data\DatabaseName.0.db\DimentionName_31a096a3-48ac-4aee-81d8-44a1d1f1f2a1.1.dim.xml'.
An error occurred when loading the DatabaseName database, from the file, '\\?\SystemDrive:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSAS11.T1\OLAP\Data\DatabaseName.0.db.xml'.

Cause

The issue occurs because of a bug that prevents the IMBI engine from reading or writing more than 4 gigabytes (GB) of data.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
