SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:

  • Windows 7 computer is playing audio through a USB audio device
  • Driver Verifier deadlock detection is enabled on the Kernel Streaming (KS.sys) driver
  • The computer is put to sleep and then resumed

When the computer wakes from sleep, Driver Verifier will detect a potential deadlock and the following stop error will be displayed:

STOP 0x000000C4 (0x00001001, 0xbbbbbbbb, 0xcccccccc, 0xdddddddd) DRIVER_VERIFIER_DETECTED_VIOLATION

CAUSE

Potential deadlock occurs as a result of lock acquisition ordering between the KS.sys device create thread and the KS.sys device wake thread.

RESOLUTION

Do not enable Driver Verifier deadlock detection on the KS.sys driver while playing audio through a USB audio device and performing sleep/resume operations.
