System Process Loses Delayed-Write Data with Windows Clustering

SUMMARY

When you shut down a cluster node that currently owns cluster resources, you may receive the following error message:
System Process - Lost Delayed-Write Data The system was attempting to transfer file data from buffers to \Device\Harddisk#\Partition#\. The write operation failed, and only some of the data may have been written to the file.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, install the fixes that are described in the following two articles in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

You may receive an error message regarding Dtcsetup.exe when installing this hotfix. This occurs because the version of Dtcsetup.exe that is contained in the hotfix is already present on the destination server in the Winnt\System32 folder. If this is the case, you can either:
  • Modify the Hotfix.inf file by placing a semicolon (;) in front of the Dtcsetup.exe line in the [MustReplace.System32.files] section. Save the updated Hotfix.inf file and then apply the hotfix.

    -or-
  • Delete the existing version of Dtcsetup.exe in the Winnt\System32 folder and then apply the hotfix.
