Win32_NetworkAdapterConfiguration Methods Do Not Accept IP Addresses With Zero Octets

The following Win32_NetworkAdapterConfiguration methods return an "Invalid IP Address" (70) result code when they are passed with an IP address with an octet set to the value 0 (zero):

• SetGateways
• SetWINSServer
• EnableDNS
• SetDNSServerSearchOrder

For example, these methods do not properly handle the IP address 192.168.0.3 because the third octet is set to 0.

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

How to Use the Hotfix Installer

NOTE: You can use this method on only Intel-based computers with Windows NT 4.0 installed.

1. Copy the hotfix file (Q272617.exe) to a local folder on your computer, or copy the file to a share on your network.
2. Run the Q272617.exe file and follow the directions.
3. Reboot your computer.
