Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2012 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2012 fix release.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a Microsoft SQL Server 2012 failover cluster instance on a computer that is running Server Core for Windows Server.

  • You apply Cumulative Update 1 for SQL Server 2012 to the failover cluster instance.

  • You try to install one of the following features on the computer:

    • Database Engine Services

    • SQL Server Replication

    • Full-Text and Semantic Extractions for Search

    • Analysis Services

    • Client Tools Connectivity

    • Integration Services

    • SQL Client Connectivity SDK

In this scenario, the installation of the new feature fails and, the following error message is recorded the Detail.txt file:

You have selected a feature that is not supported on Windows Server Core. The supported features on Windows Server Core are: Database Engine Services, SQL Server Replication, Full-Text and Semantic Extractions for Search, Analysis Services, Client Tools Connectivity, Integration Services, and SQL Client Connectivity SDK.

Note The Detail.txt file is generated in the following location:

<System drive>:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Setup Bootstrap\Log

Cause

This issue occurs because the Data Quality Services (DQS) feature is not removed from the list of features that Server Core operating systems do not support. However, the DQS feature is automatically installed when you install a SQL Server 2012 failover cluster instance after you apply cumulative update 1 for SQL Server 2012.

Note There is a regression in cumulative update 1 for SQL Server 2012. After you apply the update, SQL Server 2012 supports the DQS feature on failover clusters. For detailed information, click the following article number to view the article in Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Resolution

After you apply the fix, the DQS feature is removed from the list of features that Server Core operating systems do not support.
