OFF2001: Error Messages When You Start an Office 2001 Program After Starting the Computer from a System CD

When you start your Macintosh computer from a system CD-ROM, you may be unable to start any of the Microsoft Office 2001 for Mac programs.

Starting an Office program after starting the computer from a system CD-ROM is a troubleshooting step used to test the operating system. The system CD-ROM contains programs that you can use to initialize, test, and repair disks.

The following error messages may appear when you start Office programs after the computer is started from the system CD: NOTE: Entourage does not start when the computer is started from the system CD.

Several files must be available when Office programs start. When you install Office, these files are copied to the system folder that is currently active. Office uses these files when programs start.

When you start the Macintosh from the system CD, the active system folder is changed to the system folder located on the CD. However, the system folder on the CD does not contain the preferences or extensions that Office uses at startup; therefore, you receive error messages.

If Office cannot find the files in the system folder, it searches for them in the Microsoft Office 2001:Office folder on your hard disk.

To work around this issue, click OK to remove the error messages from the screen. You may need to do this multiple times because the error messages may reappear.

To start an Office program after you start your computer from the system CD, you must copy certain Office system files to the Microsoft Office 2001:Office folder on your hard disk. To do this, see the "More Information" section of this article.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

By copying files from the Extensions folder to the Office folder, you are able to start Office 2001 programs with a computer started from an alternate system for testing purposes. However, many functions, such as printing, are unavailable under these circumstances.

Copy the Office System Files to the Office Folder

To copy the Office system files to the Office folder, follow these steps:

1. Quit all programs.
2. Open the Extensions folder in the System folder, and then hold down the SHIFT key while you select the following files:
   Microsoft Component Library
   Microsoft Internet Library
   Microsoft OLE Automation
   Microsoft OLE Library
   Microsoft Structured Storage
3. With these files selected, press and hold down the OPTION key, and then drag the files onto the desktop. This action places a copy of the files on the desktop. (Holding down the OPTION key causes the files to be copied instead of moved.)
4. Move the files from the desktop to the Office folder, located in the Microsoft Office 2001 folder.
5. Use one of the methods in the "How to Start Your Computer from a System CD" section to start your computer from the system CD.

NOTE: After you are finished troubleshooting, drag these extra files from the Office folder to the Trash, so that the files don't continue to take up hard-disk space.

How to Start Your Computer from a System CD

To start a Macintosh computer from a system CD, follow these steps:

1. Insert a system CD in the CD-ROM drive.
2. Restart the computer while holding down the C key.

NOTE: Not all Power Macintosh computers can be started from CD-ROM by holding down the C key at startup. If this method does not work, try one of the following methods.

Alternate Method 1: Use a Key Combination

Hold down COMMAND+SHIFT+OPTION+DELETE.

This action forces the operating system to bypass the internal hard disk and look for a different system folder, which may be on a CD-ROM, zip, floppy, or other removable cartridge drive, or on a different hard disk.

Alternate Method 2: Change the Startup Disk Settings

1. Restart the computer from the hard disk (normal restart).
2. On the Apple menu, click Control Panels, and then click Startup Disk.
3. Select System CD as the Startup Disk.

NOTE: To use this method, the CD must already be inserted, so that it can be read by the computer while it is running from the hard disk system folder. After you have completed your troubleshooting steps, be sure to reselect the internal hard disk as the startup disk.

IMPORTANT: Starting the computer from the system CD is only a troubleshooting method, and it is not recommended that you run programs this way for an extended period of time. When you start an Office program after starting the computer from a system CD, you may experience any of the following limitations in functionality:

• Microsoft Entourage does not start.
• You cannot run the spelling checker in Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint 2001.
• When you try to save in Excel 2001, the following error message appears:
  Microsoft Excel cannot open or save any more documents because there is not enough available memory or disk space.
  When you click OK, the following error message appears:
  Document not saved.
• When you try to save in Word 2001 or PowerPoint 2001, the Save command is unavailable. However, if you click Save as and then select the hard disk in the location box, you are able to save.
• The Formatting Palette is displayed without text.
• The ToolTips are displayed without text.
• The Data Merge Manager in Word is displayed without text.
• Various fonts are not available.
• You are unable to print.
