SYMPTOMS

When you use tools such as LDP or ADSIEdit to view users in Active Directory, the MemberOf attribute is not populated for the user accounts, even though the users are included in the Member attribute of the corresponding group.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if you do not have permissions to read the MemberOf attribute on the user account. To read the MemberOf attribute, you must be a member of one of the following groups:

Account Operators
Print Operators
Server Operators
Backup Operators
Administrators

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, check the permissions of the account that you are using to view the user properties to ensure that you are a member of one of these groups.
