Symptoms

You have a Server Core installation of a Windows-based server that is running the domain controller role or the Domain Name System (DNS) server role. When you try to upgrade to Windows Server 2012 Release Candidate, the upgrade is not completed successfully.

Note After the upgrade fails, you can successfully roll back the installation to the previous Windows operating system.

Workaround

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods, and then install the domain controller role or the DNS server role:
  • Install Windows Server 2012 Release Candidate as a clean installation.
  • Upgrade a Server Core installation of a Windows-based server that is not running the domain controller role or the DNS server role.
