Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R3-based OS design that includes the following components:
    • Device Management Client (SYSGEN_DEVMGMT)
    • Simple Network Management Protocol (SYSGEN_SNMP)
  • You add the SimDeviceID DWORD and set its value to 2 under the following registry key for the OS design:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\ApplicationDownload
  • You build a run-time image for the OS design, and then you run the image on a device.
  • In Control Panel, you select Device Management, enter a server name, and then you click Next to configure a server on the device.

In this scenario, the servicesd.exe process shuts down unexpectedly. Additionally, you receive the following error message on the device:
Application Error

Application servicesd.exe encountered a serious error and must shut down.

Cause

This issue occurs because a variable is not initialized in the Dminfos.lib module. This causes an "Access Violation" exception to occur.
