In the June 26, 2012 hotfix packages for Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 and Microsoft Outlook 2010, the Connection Status dialog was updated to provide additional details. These are especially helpful when you connect to Microsoft Exchange Online accounts in an Office 365 environment.

To view the Outlook connection status properties, follow these steps: 

  1. Press and hold CTRL, and then click the Microsoft Outlook icon in the notification area.

    Note By default in Windows 7, the Outlook icon is hidden from view in the notification area.
  2. Click Connection Status.

The June 26, 2012 hotfix packages for Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2010 introduce several changes to the Exchange Server Connection Status dialog box. The dialog box can be resized. Also, the following columns were added:

This indicates the autentication type the connection is actually using. This information can be used to determine whether the wrong auth type is enabled in Exchange or if Outlook is not honoring the auth type specified by AutoDiscover. 

Sess type (foreground, background, spooler, or cache)
This specifies whether Outlook is connected to the Exchange mailbox in Cached Exchange Mode or online mode. This information is useful when troubleshooting latency issues.

Note The connection marked as a Cache session is used to perform synchronization operations. Additionally, other MAPI sessions may connect by using an existing connection.

Proxy Server
This indicates which proxy server Outlook is connecting to. If you are connected to the Exchange server that uses RPC over TCP (RPC/TCP), the proxy name does not appear. Only the RPC server appears under the Server name column. 

SMTP Address
Because Outlook supports multiple Exchange accounts, this column indicates the account that is associated with a given connection. 

The values in this field let you quickly determine whether connection consolidation is working.
