Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You add some shared printers to a Windows 7-based or Windows Server 2008 R2-based print server.
  • You remove one of the printers from the print server.
  • You configure a computer to spool a print job to a file port by selecting the Print to File option.
In this scenario, the Print Spooler (Spoolsv.exe) process crashes. Additionally, the following event is logged in the Application log:

Log Name: Application
Source: Application Error
Event ID: 1000
Task Category: (100)
Level: Error
Keywords: Classic
Description: Faulting application spoolsv.exe, version version name, time stamp timestamp ...

Cause

This issue is caused by an access violation that occurs in the Spoolsv.exe process. When you remove a printer from the print server, the INIPRINTER instance is deleted. However, the reference instance of the INIPRINTER instance in the INIPORT data structure is not deleted. Therefore, when the computer tries to assign a print job to a file port, an access violation occurs.
