"STOP 1E" Error in a Video Driver While Autochk Is Running During Startup

SYMPTOMS

If Windows 2000 is configured to enter system standby with a time-out value set to a value that is less than the amount of time it takes to scan a disk and fix errors, and Autochk is scheduled to run, you may receive a "STOP 1E" error message on a blue screen that refers to the video driver. Autochk may be scheduled to run after the next reboot because of an incomplete shutdown, or if you attempted to perform a complete scan of the disk and automatically fix any errors.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the video driver may not have been completely initialized before the standby occurred. When Power Manager sends the request to turn off the monitor, the video driver generates an error while it is trying to access uninitialized variables.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
