SYMPTOMS

When you create a multilevel list, and then apply one of the outline numbered list formats that appear on the Outline Numbered tab under Bullets and Numbering, you find that your list is numbered incorrectly.

For example, you expect a list to appear as follows:
1. One
    1.1. Two
        1.1.1. Three

However, the list appears in one of the following formats.

Format 1
1. One
2. Two
     2.11. Three

Format 2
1. One
	1.1.1. Two
		 1.1.1.1.1. Three

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, change the level of items in your list in one of the following ways:
  • Select a list item, and then press SHIFT+TAB or TAB.
  • Select an item, and then click Decrease Indent or Increase Indent on the Formatting toolbar.

Note In Microsoft Office Word 2007, select an item. Then, click Decrease Indent or Increase Indent in the Paragraph group on the Home tab.
