SYMPTOMS

When an Exchange 2000 Server using clear text authenticates a Lotus Notes R5 client, the Windows 2000 Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) service may return a protocol error.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
