SYMPTOMS

There is a potential security vulnerability in the HyperTerminal program that is included with Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Millennium Edition (Me). A buffer-overflow vulnerability in this program could potentially allow arbitrary code to be run on a user's computer.

CAUSE

For this problem to occur, a malicious user would have to to convince a user to open an HTML document that contains a malformed Telnet address (URL).

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem.
