If a Web page contains a link to a Microsoft Office document and that link is contained in a frame, you cannot save the document in its original format if you activate the document in the frame. You can save the document only in HTML format.

How to Obtain the Latest Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack
WORKAROUND
To work around this behavior, and save the document in its original format, you must open the file in a new window. You can open a document in a new window using one of the following steps:
STATUS
If you do not want to use one of the workarounds, a fix is available and is included in Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 2 (SP2). After you apply the fix, you have to click Away from in the document when it is open in the frame, and then use the tab key to retrieve the focus to the document. After the document has regained the focus, you are able to save it in the documents original format.
