You cannot unlock a BitLocker-encrypted drive after you upgrade to Windows 8

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  1. On a Windows 7-based computer, you install an application that registers a drive shortcut menu handler. For example, if you install Microsoft System Center 2012 Endpoint Protection, it registers a drive shortcut menu handler so that a Scan with System Center 2012 Endpoint Protection option is available when you right-click a drive.
  2. You upgrade the computer from Windows 7 to Windows 8.
  3. You try to open a hard drive or a USB flash drive that is encrypted by BitLocker Drive Encryption.
In this scenario, you cannot unlock the encrypted drive. Additionally, you receive the following error message:

To fix this problem, the following BitLocker settings need to be configured in the registry:
Registry subkey:HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell\unlock-bde
Registry entry: (Default)
REG_EXPAND_SZ value: @%SystemRoot%\System32\bdeunlock.exe,-100

Registry subkey: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell\unlock-bde\command
Registry entry: (Default)
REG_EXPAND_SZ value: %SystemRoot%\System32\bdeunlock.exe %1
To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search. Or, if you are using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, and then click Search.
  2. In the search box, type regedit.
  3. Tap or click the displayed regedit icon.
  4. Locate and then select the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell\unlock-bde\
  5. Double-tap or double-click (Default), type @%SystemRoot%\System32\bdeunlock.exe,-100, and then tap or click OK.
  6. Locate and then select the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell\unlock-bde\command\
  7. Double-tap or double-click (Default), type %SystemRoot%\System32\bdeunlock.exe %1, and then tap or click OK.
  8. Close Registry Editor.
