SYMPTOMS

If you specify a nonexistent server in the connection information for a Microsoft Access project (ADP), you receive one of the following error messages:

Error message 1

Microsoft Data Link Error

Test connection failed because of an error in initializing provider. [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen(Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied.

Error message 2

Microsoft Data Link Error

[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen(Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied.

RESOLUTION

Specify an existing server name in the connection information for a Microsoft Access project (ADP).

Steps to reproduce the problem

Open any project in Microsoft Access.
On the File menu, click Connection

Note In Microsoft Office Access 2007, click Microsoft Office button, point to Server, and then click Connections
Type any server name that does not exist. For example, type abcdefg.

Note In Access 2007, click to select Use Windows NT Integrated security under Enter information to log on to the server.
Click Test Connection. Note that you receive the following error message:
Microsoft Data Link Error

Test connection failed because of an error in initializing provider. [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen(Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied.
Click OK in the error message box, and then try to click to select a database on the server. Note that you receive the following error message:
