SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install Windows 2000 on an Intelligent Drive Electronics (IDE)-based or UltraDMA66/ATA66-based computer, you may receive the following error message:
STOP 0x0000007A (0xc03f33fc, 0xc000000e, 0xfccffcba, ox0696b860)
KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR ***Address xxxxxxxx has base at xxxxyyyy -
atapi.sys

CAUSE

This issue can occur if you have the UlraDMA66/ATA66 (80 wire/40 pin) IDE cable attached to the drive that you are trying to install Windows 2000 on. Windows 2000 does not fully support the UltraDMA66 controller.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use either of the following methods:
  • Change the UltraDMA66/ATA66 (80 wire/40 pin) IDE cable to a Standard AT Attachment (ATA) (40 wire/40 pin) IDE cable and check the manufacturer of your motherboard periodically for updated ATA66 drivers for Windows 2000.

    NOTE: These cables are often distinguished by a blue connector at one end and a gray connector at the other. The cable also has smaller humps and wires than standard ATA cables.

  • When you receive the following informational message when you start to run text mode Setup, enter the updated UltraDMA66 driver for Windows 2000:
    Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver.
NOTE: Some UltraDMA66/ATA66 drive firmware is set to UltraDMA66/ATA66. In addition, some older motherboards do not support UltraDMA66/ATA66. Ask your hard disk manufacturer for either jumper settings or a program that you can use to enable ATA33 protocol over ATA66 protocol on the drive or on a motherboard that has built-in UltraDMA66/ATA66 controllers that are not supported in Windows 2000.

This error may also be displayed when you attempt to install Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 or other programs from the CD-ROM drive. Check the manufacturer of your motherboard for updated ATA66 drivers for Windows 2000 that fully resolve this issue.
