XADM: How to Reset System Folders on an Exchange 2000 Server

This article describes how to create new site folders on Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. To create new site folders, you must use the Guidgen.exe utility. This utility is available in the in the Support\Utils\I386 folder on the Exchange 2000 Server CD. If you do not have access to this utility, contact Microsoft Product Support Services (PSS), or download the Guidgen.exe utility from Microsoft Support.

Note Although the downloadable GUIDgen.EXE file is for Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, it does work with Exchange 2000.

The Guidgen.exe utility randomly generates a GUID that is used to rebuild the site folders. Because the folders are re-created, the data contained in the original site folders are lost.

Warning If you use the ADSI Edit snap-in, the LDP utility, or any other LDAP version 3 client, and you incorrectly modify the attributes of Active Directory objects, you can cause serious problems. These problems may require you to reinstall Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, or both Windows and Exchange. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems that occur if you incorrectly modify Active Directory object attributes can be solved. Modify these attributes at your own risk.

To reset the site folders on Exchange 2000:

1. Run Guidgen.exe.
2. Under GUID Format, select Registry Format.
3. Generate a new GUID, copy that value, and paste the results into a text editor such as Notepad
4. Quit Guidgen.exe.
5. Remove the brackets and hyphens from the newly generated GUID.
6. For every two characters, prefix them with 0x (zero) and follow them with a space. For example, the string:
   72D9691FA2194b798F24C0F6E5D2115F
   becomes:
   0x72 0xD9 0x69 0x1F 0xA2 0x19 0x4b 0x79 0x8F 0x24 0xC0 0xF6 0xE5 0xD2 0x11 0x5F
7. Open ADSI Edit from the Windows 2000 Support Tools, and locate:
   CN=[Your Administrative Group],CN=Administrative Groups,CN=[Your Org],CN=Microsoft Exchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=[Your Domain],DC=com
   Note To locate this item, double-click to expand the following containers:
   1. Configuration Container [Computer.Domain.Com]
   2. CN=Configuration, DC=(Your DC),DC=com
   3. CN=Services
   4. CN=Microsoft Exchange
   5. CN=(Your Organization)
   6. CN=Adminstrative Groups
   7. CN=(Your Administrative Group)
8. Open the properties of CN=(Your Administrative Group).
9. On the Attributes tab under Select a Property to View, click SiteFolderGuid.
10. Paste the 0x formatted GUID in the Edit Attribute field.
11. Click Set.
12. Click OK.
13. Quit ADSI Edit.
14. Depending on the domain controller that ADSI Edit was connected to when you added the GUID, you may have to wait for Active Directory replication or force Active Directory replication.
15. Restart the Exchange Services
