WD2000: How to Apply the Word Mail Merge Security Update to an Administrative Installation

To support the Windows Installer features of self-repair, install-on-demand, and reinstall, Microsoft Word 2000 must be able to control how its files are updated.

For this reason, Microsoft Word updates are distributed as a Windows Installer patch package (*.msp). This package contains all of the information necessary to correctly update the Windows Installer database for Microsoft Word 2000.

To update an administrative installation of Microsoft Word 2000, the Windows Installer patch package uses a full-file replacement for the affected files. This package can be applied to any Microsoft Office 2000 administrative image, regardless of whether the image has been previously updated.

To install the Word Mail Merge Security Update to your Microsoft Word 2000 administrative installation, follow these steps:

1. Download the administrative version of the Word Mail Merge Security Update (Wrdacc_a.exe). The update file is available in the Microsoft Office 2000 Resource Kit on the following Microsoft Web site:
   http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/2000/appndx/toolbox.htm (http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/2000/appndx/toolbox.htm)
2. After the file is downloaded, double-click the Wrdacc_a.exe file to extract the Windows Installer patch package (Winword_admin.msp).
3. Quit all Microsoft Office 2000 programs on all workstations.
4. Click Start and then click Run.
5. In the Open box, type the following, and then click OK:
   msiexec /a admin_path /p patch_path SHORTFILENAMES=1
   where admin_path is the path to your administrative image .msi file, and patch_path is the path to the Windows Installer patch package (Winword_admin.msp) that you extracted in step 2.

Any subsequent client installations from this image will include the latest version of the files. However, existing clients must recache and repair their installation to this admin image after the update is applied. To do this, follow these steps on the client computer:

1. Quit all Microsoft Office 2000 programs.
2. Click Start and then click Run.
3. In the Open box, type the following, and then click OK:
   msiexec /i admin_path REINSTALL=ALL REINSTALLMODE=vomus
   where admin_path is the path to the updated .msi file on your Microsoft Office 2000 administrative image.
