"Method not allowed" error message when you use Windows authentication to open the PerformancePoint Dashboard Designer in SharePoint Server 2013

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You configure a web application to use multiple authentication methods in Microsoft SharePoint Server 2013.
  • You use forms-based authentication to log on to the web application.
  • You use Windows authentication to open the PerformancePoint Dashboard Designer.

In this scenario, you receive an HTTP 405 "Method not allowed" error message, or you are redirected to an authentication dialog box that prompts you to select an authentication method.

Cause

This issue occurs because SharePoint Server 2013 does not provide support for switching between authentication providers at the TCP and cookie level in PerformancePoint Dashboard Designer.

Workaround

To work around this issue, use the same authentication method to open the PerformancePoint Dashboard Designer and to log on to the web application. For example, use forms-based authentication in both instances.
