Symptoms

  • Lync incoming or outgoing calls to the PSTN are unresponsive
  • Lync VoIP calls that are routed to and from the PSTN suffer from poor audio quality

Cause

The Lync Server Mediation server is configured to use only one network adapter

Note For all Lync Server roles 1 network adapter is required but are 2 network adapters are recommended, each 1 Gbps or higher

For more details on Lync Server hardware requirements please read the following Microsoft TechNet article:

Resolution

Add a second network adapter to the Lync Server that hosts the Mediation server role. This will approximately double the network throughput to and from the Lync Server server that hosts the Lync Server Mediation Server role. An additional network adapter can be added to the Windows server based computer as a teamed network adapter solution or to support a separate network subnet.

Teamed network adapters allow the use of dual port configurations that effectively double the throughput of network traffic that the Lync Server server can send and receive. This equates to more available network bandwidth for the additional SIP signaling and audio media traffic that are created by the collocated or non-collocated Lync Server Mediation Server role.

Note Teamed network adapter solutions are supported by the server or hardware vendor

Adding a second network adapter to support routing IP traffic to a different network provides a more secure network solution between the PSTN Gateway or SIP trunk solution and the Lync Server server that hosts the Lync Mediation Server role. This solution also provides more available network bandwidth for the SIP signaling and audio media traffic that is created by the collocated or non-collocated Lync Server Mediation Server role.
