PROBLEM

In Microsoft Office 2013 client applications, you may experience one of the following issues: 
  • When you try to start an Office 2013 application on your Windows-based computer, nothing happens. Or, the screen flashes briefly. 
  • When you start an Office 2013 application such as Lync 2013, you see a blank screen, and no controls are available.

Update the hardware drivers for your computer

To resolve this issue, update the hardware drivers for your computer. For more information, see Update drivers: recommended links.

WORKAROUND

If updating your drivers doesn’t resolve the issue, you can turn off hardware acceleration as a workaround until a fix is released by your graphics driver manufacturer. To do this, use one of the following methods, as appropriate for your situation.

Method 1: Disable hardware graphics acceleration

Disable hardware graphics acceleration in Microsoft Outlook 2013. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Outlook.
  2. Click File, and then click Options.
  3. In the Advanced group, click to select the Disable hardware graphics acceleration check box.

Method 2: Add the DisableHardwareAcceleration registry subkey

Important Follow the steps in this section carefully. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.

If you can’t access Outlook 2013 to disable hardware acceleration, create the DisableHardwareAcceleration registry subkey. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Exit all instances of Office applications (for example, Office 365, Outlook, and Lync Online).
  2. Start Registry Editor.
  3. Create the following registry value:
    Subkey: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common\Graphics\
    DWORD: DisableHardwareAcceleration
    Value: 1

  4. Exit Registry Editor, and then start your Office application.
