Internet Explorer May Not Open a Small Document

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to open a small document (such as a Microsoft Office document or a .pdf file) in Internet Explorer 5.01 or Internet Explorer 5.01 Service Pack 1 (SP1), you may receive the following error message:
The page cannot be displayed.
If you click Refresh, the document is displayed correctly.

CAUSE

This problem can occur under the following conditions:
  1. If the document is sent to the browser and the document includes the Content-Type or Content-Length headers. This is done by either using Active Server Pages (ASP) (Response.BinaryWrite), an Internet Server Application Programming Interface (ISAPI) extension, or a Common Gateway Interface (CGI) script.
  2. If the document is relatively small in size.
  3. If the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) that is requested is a long URL (more than 255 characters).

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Internet Explorer version 5.01. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Internet Explorer version 5.01 Service Pack 2.
