Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • A client computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 is in an Active Directory domain.

  • You use a Group Policy Object (GPO) to configure the folder redirection policy to redirect a document folder to a share folder. For example, you configure the following path: \\userst\s\1\prefs\appdata.

  • You use the GPO to configure the folder redirection policy to redirect the document folder to a different sub folder in the same share folder. For example, you configure the following path: \\userst\s\1\appdata.

  • You log on to the domain from the client computer, and then you try to open the redirected share folder.

In this scenario, the folder redirection policy fails. Therefore, you cannot open the redirected share folder. Additionally, an event that resembles the following is logged in the event log:

Note Before you redirect the folder to a different sub folder, the folder redirection policy works as expected.

Cause

This issue occurs because the GPO does not copy the redirected folder to the destination folder when you change the redirected folder in Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 by using GPO. Instead, the GPO tries to copy the redirected folder to the offline file cache. However, before the GPO copies the files to the offline file cache, the GPO sets the share folder to offline mode. Therefore, when the source folder and the destination folder are in the same share folder, the CopyFolders function fails.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

Note If additional issues occur or if any troubleshooting is required, you might have to create a separate service request. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for this specific hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Customer Service and Support telephone numbers or to create a separate service request, visit the following Microsoft website:

http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=supportNote The "Hotfix download available" form displays the languages for which the hotfix is available. If you do not see your language, it is because a hotfix is not available for that language.

If you experience the issue that is described in this article, pin the original share folder (the share folder that corresponds to the \\userst\s\1\prefs\appdata path in the example in the 'Symptoms' section) on the computer after you install the hotfix. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Open Windows Explorer.

  2. Right-click the share folder that you want to pin on the computer.

  3. Click Always available offline.

Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 file information notes

Important Windows 7 hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 R2 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, hotfixes on the Hotfix Request page are listed under both operating systems. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.

  • The files that apply to a specific product, milestone (RTM, SPn), and service branch (LDR, GDR) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table:
