"404.17 - Not Found" error message when you try to connect to a Lync Server 2010 web service

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install Windows Server 2012.
  • The installation includes Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.5.
  • You install Microsoft Lync Server 2010.
  • You install the Lync Server 2010 front-end server roles.
  • You try to connect to a Lync Server 2010 web service. For example, you try to connect to the Lync Server Control Panel.
In this scenario, you may receive an error message that resembles the following:
404.17 - Not Found
The requested content appears to be script and will not be served by the static file handler.

Cause

This issue occurs if the Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0 version is used for the Lync Server 2010 application pools.

Note By default, the .NET Framework Version setting is v4.0 for the Lync Server 2010 application pools when you install Lync Server 2010 on a Windows Server 2012-based computer. However, the Lync Server 2010 web services use the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, configure the Lync Server 2010 application pools to use the .NET Framework 2.0. To do this, follow these steps.

Note You must have permissions that are equal to the local administrator account to follow these steps.
  1. Click the Windows logo key to access the Start screen, click Server Manager, and then click OK.
  2. In Server Manager, click Tools, and then click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
  3. Expand localhost, and then click Application Pools.
  4. Right-click CsExtAuthPool, and then click Advanced Settings.
  5. Click .NET Framework Version, click v2.0, and then click OK.
  6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each application pool that has a name that begins with "Cs."
  7. Click the Windows logo key to access the Start screen, type cmd, and then click cmd.
  8. Type the following command into the Windows Command Prompt window, and then press Enter:

    iisreset /restart
  9. Close the Command Prompt window.
