XADM: Exchange 2000 Can't Manage a Very Large Number of Domain Queues Simultaneously

SYMPTOMS

The Exchange 2000 server may have an unusually large number of messages in the remote queue awaiting delivery.

This condition can be caused by sending mail to a large number (for example, more than 36,000) of different domains.

The gateway name handling process does a query for each fully qualified domain name (FQDN) to see if it is the FQDN of an Exchange 2000 server. This search can take up to 100 milliseconds to complete. Because of this time delay, routing to 36,000 different domains takes on the order of one hour to complete.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 1.
