Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You grant a delegate the Full Access permission to a manager’s Calendar folder in a Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 environment.

  • You add the following registry keys to the Mailbox server. These keys apply to the mailbox store that holds the resource mailboxes:

    Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\msExchangeIS\Server Name\StoreName
Value Name: Sent Representing Acts as Author
    Value Type: REG_DWORD
    Value Data: Nonzero positive value

    Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\msExchangeIS\ServerName\StoreName
Value Name: Delegate Acts as Author
    Value Type: REG_DWORD
    Value Data: Nonzero positive value
Note After you add the "Delegate Acts as Author" registry key, the manager can change calendar items that the delegate creates on behalf of the manager. However, we do not recommend that you add the registry key as it may cause performance problems.

  • The delegate creates a meeting request on behalf of the manager. Then, the manager tries to change the calendar item.

In this scenario, the Store.exe process crashes on the Exchange Server 2010 Mailbox server. Additionally, the following event is logged in the Application log:

Cause

This issue occurs because the Sent Representing Acts as Author and Delegate Acts as Author registry keys cause memory corruption when the Exchange store validates a security descriptor.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, install the following update rollup:

2746164 Description of Update Rollup 6 for Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 2

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
