Diskperf.exe May Hang with 8-Character Entry in the Registry Filter List

SYMPTOMS

Diskperf.exe may stop responding (hang) if both of the following conditions exist:

There are filter drivers on the disk class registry key (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\UpperFilters) that have 8-character names (the same length as the name "diskperf").
One of these names is located before the "diskperf" filter name in the filter list.

CAUSE

This behavior is caused by a problem in Diskperf.exe that causes the program to enter an infinite loop.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.
