Diskperf.exe May Hang with 8-Character Entry in the Registry Filter List

Diskperf.exe may stop responding (hang) if both of the following conditions exist:
  • There are filter drivers on the disk class registry key (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\UpperFilters) that have 8-character names (the same length as the name "diskperf").
  • One of these names is located before the "diskperf" filter name in the filter list.


This behavior is caused by a problem in Diskperf.exe that causes the program to enter an infinite loop.

The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:
   Date      Time     Version        Size    File name

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.
