SYMPTOMS

When you click a button on the Office 2000 Shortcut Bar (OSB), you receive the Open With dialog box, which asks you which program to use to open the file.

CAUSE

This behavior may be caused by one or more Windows registry entries similar to the following:
  • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\Shell\openas
  • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\Shell\openas\command

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To correct the problem, export the registry key (so that it can be added back easily if needed), and then delete it. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Close all open programs, including the OSB.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Select the key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\Shell\openas by clicking it.
  4. On the File menu, click Export Registry File. Confirm that the selected branch listed is correct.
  5. Type a unique file name such as ShellOpen, and then click Save. NOTE: If you export multiple keys, be sure to save each one to a separate file.
  6. Confirm that the exported file is written. With the same key selected, click Delete on the Edit menu.
