SQL Server 2000 takes much more time to compile a query against a local partitioned view than SQL Server 7.0, when the following conditions are met:
SQL Server 2000 introduces statistics based on cardinality estimation for unions. The additional time consumed is to combine all the histograms for the input columns. But under the special conditions described above, we don't need to combine the histograms because there is no predicate on the union columns.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in SQL Server 2000. This problem was first corrected in SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 1.
