Symptoms

Assume that you have Internet Explorer 10 installed on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. When you upgrade the computer to Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012, all search history data, form data, temporary Internet files, cookies, saved passwords, and other browser caches are lost.

Cause

This issue occurs for one of the following reasons:

  • The sector size of the Extensible Storage Engine API (ESENT) database between Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012 is incompatible.

  • Certain indexes in the caches become invalid after you upgrade the operating system.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, follow these steps on the computer after you upgrade to Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012:

  1. Sign in to the computer by using an administrator user.

  2. Apply the update that is described in this article.

  3. Install the most recent cumulative security update for Internet Explorer. To do this, go to the following Microsoft website: http://update.microsoft.com

Note This update was first included in the following security update:

2829530 MS13-037: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer: May 14, 2013

In this situation, all temporary Internet files and histories of other users on this computer persist correctly after the upgrade.

Note The temporary Internet files and histories of the administrator user who you used to apply these updates will be lost.

Windows 8, and Windows Server 2012 file information notes

  • The files that apply to a specific product, milestone (RTM, SPn), and service branch (LDR, GDR) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table:

    Version

    Product

    Milestone

    Service branch

    6.2.920 0.16 xxx

Windows 8, and Windows Server 2012

    RTM

    GDR

    6.2.920 0.20 xxx

Windows 8, and Windows Server 2012

    RTM

    LDR

  • GDR service branches contain only those fixes that are widely released to address widespread, critical issues. LDR service branches contain hotfixes in addition to widely released fixes.

  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows RT, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2012" section. MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintain the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
