Windows Media Services: Query String Is Not Logged When You Connect Through HTTP

SYMPTOMS

When a user requests a stream by using HTTP, the query string at the end of the URL is not logged properly. Many users must connect using HTTP because they are connecting from behind a firewall. When a user requests a UDP or TCP, the query string is logged properly.

CAUSE

The URL field (cs-uri-stem) in the log data for the HTTP protocol comes from a client HTTP POST. This POST does not include the query string at the end of the URL.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem.

Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help to prevent any unauthorized changes to the file.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

With this fix installed, Nsum.exe retrieves the query string from the URL that is used to open the content. The query string is inserted into the log data when you set the LogQueryInClientURL registry parameter.

This fix supercedes all other fixes to Nsum.exe prior to version 8.0.0.3922 for Windows 2000 and 4.1.0.3859 for Windows NT 4.0.
