Backup Fails with Error 80070426

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Msdmback.vbs script to back up a SharePoint Portal Server computer, you may receive the following error message:
Error: An error occurred during backup. See the event log for more details
ErrNo: 80070426
Desc: The service has not been started.
Source: MSSearch.Admin.1
In addition, the following event ID message may be logged in the Application event log:
Event ID: 3076
Type: Error
Source: Microsoft Search
Category: Gatherer

Description: An error occurred during backup of the application. You may be unable to restore from the backup image.
Context: SharePointPortalServer Application
Details: Service has not been started (0x80070426)

CAUSE

This issue can occur if any of the required services have not started.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, ensure that the following services have started, and then restart the backup procedure:
  • Microsoft Search (MSSearch)
  • SharePoint Portal Server (Msdmserv)
  • Microsoft Exchange Information Store (MSExchangeIS)
  • Internet Information Services (IIS) Admin Service (IISAdmin)
