Windows Installer Allows Files To Be Written to NTFS Protected Directories

SYMPTOMS

When you install a setup package that is designed for use with the Microsoft Windows Installer service, a file may be written to a NTFS file system (NTFS) protected directory by a user who does not have sufficient permission to access the NTFS protected directory. More specifically, an existing file is not overwritten. However, a new file may be copied into an existing NTFS protected directory.

CAUSE

This is due to a bug in the Windows Installer engine.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

How to Obtain the Latest Windows 2000 Service Pack

The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:
