Article ID: 281739 - Last Review: January 26, 2006 - Revision: 4.0 CMYK printed colors do not match the screen colors correctly in Publisher 2002This article was previously published under Q281739 SYMPTOMS When you use Publisher 2002, the CMYK separations that are
used for process color printing on a commercial printing press may produce
colors that appear very different from the colors that appeared on the computer
screen. CAUSE The Image Color Matching (ICM) profile that is used to
provide the RBG values to the CMYK converter (Rswop.icm) may be an incorrect
version. The incorrect "sRGB Color Space Profile.icm" file can be identified by the file size of 30 kilobytes (KB). The correct "sRGB Color Space Profile.icm" file has a file size of 4 KB. This .icm file is located in the c:\Windows\System\Color directory. RESOLUTION To resolve this problem, verify whether there are multiple
versions of the "sRGB Color Space Profile.icm" file on your computer. There
should be only one version. To find the file or files, do one of the
following. NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
If only one version of this file is found, and it is incorrect, you must download Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 (SP-1) and install it. To replace the incorrect Rswop.icm file, install Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 (SP-1). To download Internet Explorer 5.5 (SP-1), browse to the following Microsoft Web site: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.mspx
(http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.mspx)
STATUSMicrosoft
has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed
at the beginning of this article.
MORE INFORMATION The RGB values are determined by the "sRGB Color Space
Profile.icm" file. An incorrect color profile can obscure the color conversion
by as much as 7 percent. Some of the colors that are printed do not match the
original colors displayed on a monitor. Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 installed an incorrect version of the "sRGB Color Space Profile.icm" file. This issue is common when upgrading from Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 to version 5.5 on computers that are using the Microsoft Windows 98 operating system. Microsoft Windows 95 and Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 use ICM 1.0, an older profile that is not affected by this upgrade. Microsoft Windows 2000 and Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition both install the new profile and should work correctly.
