CAUSE
This behavior may be caused by the Indexing Service. To see whether fast searching is installed on the computer, follow these steps. NOTE: The "fast searching" feature does not need to be installed on a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer. Instead, Office XP uses the built-in search capabilities of Windows 2000.
RESOLUTIONTurn off the Indexing ServiceTo turn off the Indexing Service, follow these steps:
Uninstall the "Support for Fast Searching" FeatureIn addition to disabling the indexing service, you can uninstall the fast searching support for Office. Unless you have a custom need for Office fast searching, you can continue using built-in searching, and you can uninstall the "support for fast searching" feature from all Office XP products that are installed.NOTE: This only applies to computers running Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition, or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0. To uninstall the "support for fast searching" feature, follow these steps:
MORE INFORMATION
Fast searching in Office XP is similar to the Find Fast feature in Office 2000. Fast searching uses the Indexing Service in Office XP to create a catalog of Office files on your computer's hard disk.
