By default, the Windows Explorer address bar and status bar may not be displayed in Microsoft Windows XP. For example, in Windows XP Home Edition, the Windows Explorer address bar is not displayed. However, in Windows XP Professional and Media Center Edition, the Windows Explorer address bar is displayed. In earlier versions of Windows, these features are displayed by default. For example, the features are displayed in Microsoft Windows 2000 and in Microsoft Windows 98.

To enable the address bar, click Toolbars on the View menu, and then click Address bar. To enable the status bar, click Status Bar on the View menu.

This behavior is by design.
