Symptoms

When you try to record a .wav file by using Sound Recorder on a computer that has more than 2 gigabytes (GB) of RAM, you receive the following error message:

Not enough memory available to complete this operation. Quit one or more applications to increase available memory, and then try again.

Note This problem only occurs when the amount of available physical memory is more than 2 GB. See the "More Information" section for information about how to determine this value.

Cause

This problem occurs because of a design limitation in Sound Recorder and not because of any problem with the underlying multimedia.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

More Information

To determine the amount of available physical memory on the computer, follow these steps:

  1. Start the Task Manager tool. To do this, click Start, click Run, type taskmgr in the Open box, and then click OK.

  2. Click the Performance tab.

  3. Under Physical Memory (K), view the amount of RAM next to Available.

Note The value is shown in kilobytes (KB). A value of 2 GB translates to 2,097,152 KB.
