Word 2002 replaces multiple words with one word when you use the Translate feature

In a Word document, when you select multiple words, and then use the translate feature, Word lists translations for all of the words that you have selected.

However, if you select a translated word from the Translate Task Pane, and then you click Replace while you still have multiple words selected in your document, you find that Word replaces the multiple words selected in your document with the single translated word from the Translate Task Pane.

Word only replaces one word at a time, even when multiple words are selected in your document. You can select multiple words in your document in order to simultaneously retrieve multiple translations, but only the one word selected in the Translate Task Pane will be used to replace the highlighted text in your document.

If you have multiple words selected in your document, then the one translated word will replace the two or more words highlighted in your document.

To work around this behavior, replace only one word at a time.

To simultaneously retrieve multiple translations, follow these steps:

• Select multiple words in your document, and then click Go in the Translate Task Pane in order.NOTE: Before you click Replace, make sure that you select only the single word that is to be replaced in your document.

This version of Word gives you the ability to translate words in your document (available languages are determined by language dictionaries that are installed) or to access a translation service on the Web.

To use the translation feature, follow these steps:

1. Point to Language on the Tools menu, and then click Translate.
2. In the Translate Task Pane, under Translate what?, do one of the following:
   • To translate a specific word or short phrase, click Text, and then type it in the Text box.
     
     -or-
   • To translate text that is selected in your document, click Current selection. If no text is selected, select it now.
3. In the Dictionary box, select the languages you want to translate from and to. For example, if you want to translate English to French, click English U.S. to French France.
   
   The languages that appear in the Dictionary box depend on the language dictionaries that are installed on your computer.
4. Click Go. The results appear in the Results box.
5. Select the word in your document that you want to translate, select the translated word in the Results box, and then click Replace.

NOTE: If the translation feature does not provide the results you want, or if you need to translate a longer piece of text, you can connect to translation services on the World Wide Web. Under Translate via the Web, select the translation service that you want, or select (More translation services), and then click Go.
