SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft PowerPoint, when you attempt to click the Landscape and Portrait buttons on the Print Preview toolbar, these buttons may be unavailable (dimmed).

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because PowerPoint allows changes in page orientation in Print Preview only when you are printing more than just slides. For example, if you are printing notes, handouts, or outlines, you can successfully change the page orientation.

WORKAROUND

If you want to change the page orientation after you see the slides in Print Preview, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Change the Page Setup

  1. In Print Preview, on the Print Preview toolbar, click Close.
  2. On the File menu, click Page Setup.
  3. In the Slides pane, click the orientation that you want, and then click OK.
  4. On the File menu, click Print Preview.

Method 2: Print Handouts

  1. In Print Preview, on the Print Preview toolbar, select Handouts (1 slide per page) on the Print What drop-down menu.
  2. On the Print Preview toolbar, click the page orientation that you want.
