When you open a project or switch to a different view in a project, Microsoft Project may quit unexpectedly, or you may receive one of the following error messages, depending on your operating system.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you do the following:

In Microsoft Project 2000, you apply a custom AutoFilter that has two filtering criteria.
While the custom AutoFilter is applied, you save the project in Microsoft Project 98 format.
You close the project while the custom AutoFilter is still applied.
You reopen the project in either Microsoft Project 98 or Microsoft Project 2000.

If the view in which you apply the custom AutoFilter is the active view when you close the project, you receive the error message when you try to reopen the project.

If the view in which you apply the custom AutoFilter is not the active view when you close the project, you can reopen the project, but you receive the error message when you try to apply the view in which the custom AutoFilter is active.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Project 2000, Service Release 1 (SR-1).

Temporary Workaround

To temporarily work around this problem, turn off the AutoFilter before you save in Microsoft Project 98 format from Microsoft Project 2000. To turn off the AutoFilter, point to Filtered for on the Project menu, and then click AutoFilter.

After this problem has occurred, you may be able to recover the project, depending on whether the view in which the custom AutoFilter is applied was the active view when you closed the project.

Scenario 1: The View in Which the Custom AutoFilter Is Applied Was Not The Active View When You Closed the Project

In this scenario, you can reopen the project, but you receive the error message when you try to apply the view in which the custom AutoFilter is active.

To recover the project in this scenario, open the project, and then turn off the AutoFilter before you attempt to apply the view in which the custom AutoFilter was previously active.

Scenario 2: The View in Which the Custom AutoFilter Is Applied Was the Active View When You Closed the Project

After this scenario has occurred, you continue to receive an error message and are unable to open the project in either Microsoft Project 2000 or Microsoft Project 98.

To recover the project in this scenario, you must use a backup copy of the project that was created before the problem occurred.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Project 2000, Service Release 1 (SR-1).
