PRJ2000: Microsoft Project Stops Responding When You Print or Print Preview

SYMPTOMS

When you print or print preview a project, Microsoft Project may quit unexpectedly, or you may receive one of the following error messages, depending on your operating system.

Microsoft Windows 2000

The instruction at address referenced memory at address. The memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the program.
Click on CANCEL to debug the program.

Microsoft Windows NT

An application error has occurred and an application error log is being generated.

Winproj.exe
Exception: access violation(0xc0000005), Address: address

Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me)

Winproj caused an error in Winproj.exe. Winproj will now close. If you continue to experience problems, try restarting the computer.

Microsoft Windows 98

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.

If you click Details, you receive the following message:

Winproj caused an invalid page fault in module Winproj.exe at address.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if all of the following conditions are true:

You use the Customize Fields command to customize a field to display a graphical indicator.
The view that you are printing or print previewing contains a column for the field that you customized.
In Page Setup mode for the view, you add the Total Page Count variable to the header, footer, or legend print areas.
You try to print or print preview the view.

To resolve this problem, obtain Microsoft Project 2000, Service Release 1 (SR-1).

Temporary Workaround

To temporarily work around this problem, remove the Total Page Count variable from the header, footer, or legend print area as appropriate.

NOTE: When you insert the Total Page Count variable into one of the print areas, the variable appears as follows:

   &[Pages]

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Project 2000, Service Release 1 (SR-1).
