Symptoms

A Windows 8 based system has a Wi-Fi Direct (WFD) capable network adapter. After the system is suspended (Sleep) and resumed, Wi-Fi Direct may no longer be available.

Cause

Wi-Fi network adapters that support Wi-Fi Direct (WFD) must be configured to allow the power state to be turned off by Windows. If the power state cannot be changed by Windows, the "Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter" will not be bound to the physical interface after resume and will be removed by a timeout.

The "Power Management" tab of the device in Device Manager displays the power setting via the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" checkbox. The checkbox must be set to 'checked' to support Wi-Fi Direct after suspend/resume.

Resolution

On the "Power Management" tab of the Network Adapter in Device Manager, check the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" checkbox.
