SYMPTOMS

The data in Microsoft Excel cells that contain formulas that include the RTD function and that evaluate to #N/A may not be refreshed as expected after you send a message to restart the RTD servers.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs after you clear the contents of any cells that include the RTD function.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, close and then reopen the workbook.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

When communication is unsuccessful between Excel and an RTD server, cells receiving data from the server evaluate to #N/A. There are several ways in which communication can fail; details are available in the Microsoft Knowledge Base articles listed in the "References" section of this article.

Communication with the RTD server can normally be restored by the RestartServers method of the Application.RTD object. However, in the event that the formulas are deleted in those cells involved in the unsuccessful communication attempt, that method may not restore communication. In such a case, communication is re-established with the RTD server when you close and then reopen the workbook.
