Consider the following scenario:
  • In Microsoft SharePoint Online, you save a subsite as a template by using the Save site as template option in Site Settings.
  • The site that you saved as a template contains a list that has an empty folder inside a folder.
  • You try to use the template to create a site.
In this scenario, you receive the following error message:
Error(null) “<name of template>/<name of list with empty folder>/<name of folder>/<name of empty folder>” not found.
Note The placeholders inside the brackets (<>) represent the names that you used on your site.

This is a known issue. Microsoft is working to resolve this issue.

This error is returned when you're using the SharePoint 2010 experience version on your SharePoint Online site. However, it doesn't occur if you're using the SharePoint 2013 experience version.
